Blogging or youtube? Which one should you choose?

I am sure you are in this dilemma right now.

Some people say that blogging is dead, while others claim that youtube traffic doesn’t convert.

Well, like anything in life, they both have their pros and cons. But the fact is, they can be both very profitable if done correctly.

Some bloggers will suggest you do both to leverage your reach, while others will tell you to focus only on one platform for the first year.

The amount of advice on the internet is endless and sometimes very confusing.

To help you with that, I will try my best to give you an in-depth overview of both, so that by the end of this article you can make the right choice.

Is blogging really better than youtube?

You must have heard many people claiming that Youtube is the future. People really don’t read blogs; they prefer to watch a youtube video.

Is this really the truth?

Let’s see some statistics to find out what is really happening.

According to this article from Optinmonster:

  • Each month there are approximately 409 million people who view more than 20 billion pages.
  • There are around 70 million posts that are being published on WordPress every month.
  • Each month 77 million new blog comments are generated.

Let’s check the trend for the term “Blogging.”

This is the trend for the term blogging for the past 5 years.

Now I have got a simple question for you.

Do you think people who are using Pinterest read blogs?

Pinterest has around 321 million active users every month. Most of those people will be directed to a blog post every time they click on a Pin.

In short, people still read blogs, and blogging is not dead.

Now, what about youtube?

Well, youtube is growing very fast. Right now, it has around 2 billion logged-in active users every month.

So, does it mean that youtube is better than blogging?

Well, the honest answer is… it depends.

There are some essential things that you should consider before you choose the right platform.

Blogging or Youtube. What you need to consider before making a choice

1. Niche selection

The first thing you should find out is whether the niche you are choosing is competitive enough.

A simple rule is this: The more competitive the niche, the more money you can earn.

If you have difficulty choosing a profitable niche, you can read this article: The top 10 niches that make the most money.

It will take you some time to figure out which niche is better suited for you.

How can you start creating content if you cannot decide on the topic you want to write?

It’s simple. Try to pick one niche and create content for a few sub-topics on that niche.

See what you like and how people are responding to your content. Based on these findings, you can choose your favorite topic.

For example, if you choose the Personal finance niche, you can write about:

  • Frugal living: Saving money tips, Coupons, Simple living, shared Housing, Tiny house movement.
  • Investing: Investment tips, Best index funds, Equity mutual funds, Fixed deposit.
  • Debt: Student debt, Mortgages, Bank loans, Lease payments.
  • Share your progress: This is where you will share your experiences and saving methods with your audience. In short, you will simply document your journey.

If you want to create product-based content, youtube is a better option to provide tutorials and reviews.

2. Who will be your target adience

Once you have selected your niche, the next thing that you should consider is your audience.

There are 3 essential things to consider when you choose an audience:

  • What age group you will target
  • What Gender will be better suited for your content
  • Which locations you will target

For instance, if you are targeting a younger audience, you will want to create videos. This is because young people love to watch videos.

If you target people who are married and have kids, then maybe you can start a blog.

This doesn’t mean that all young people prefer videos or that married couples like reading more.

But, at least it can lead you in the right direction.

For you to get a more in-depth answer, you will have to access your skills.

3. The skills that you have

The next thing you should take into consideration is your skillset.

If you don’t have any specific written skills or video editing skills, it doesn’t mean that you should not try to create content.

Many bloggers and vloggers are successful even though they didn’t have any specific skills in the beginning.

Besides, once you start to create content, you will have to learn a lot. Whether it’s writing high-quality blog posts or creating quality videos.

These skills are essential if you want to take your online business to the next level.

So, just take a few moments and try to reflect on the things you are good at.

Maybe you can try to write down all the previous jobs and your hobbies. Try to see what are your strengths and your weaknesses.

You will inevitably find that you have a few skills that you can use to leverage your online business.

Once you get an idea of your skillset, you will be better positioned to make money online.

4. How you will want to monetize your content

Have you ever thought about the monetization methods you will use for your content?

One thing that is crucial to earning money with your content on both platforms is diversifying your income.

These are some standard monetization methods for your content:

Many people think that making money online is very difficult, or maybe bloggers and YouTubers don’t earn a lot.

What I have noticed is that people who create content actually earn more money than you can think.

That’s the truth, my friend.

It all boils down to the momentum of your blog or youtube channel.

It is true that in the beginning, you won’t earn a lot of money. Maybe in the first year, you can make enough just to pay for your bills.

There are some bloggers and YouTubers who are earning a six-figure income, while others are making just a few bucks online.

So what is the difference between those who are killing it compared to those who are struggling?

The answer is simple. More quality content is created consistently.

5. How much are you ready to invest

The next thing to consider is your budget. How much are you ready to invest in your online business?

Ideally, if you have an iPhone or an android phone that records 1080p, you can instantly start your youtube channel.

Also, if you need to edit your videos, you can get that done with free software.

But if you want to start a blog, the initial investment will be around $2.95 per month.

On the surface, it looks like youtube is more cost-effective. But what if you need to upgrade the quality of your content?

Well, you will have to invest in a better camera or paid software. And what if you want to outsource content creation?

6. Do you want to hire people to create content for you?

Starting a blog or a youtube channel takes a lot of time in the first 12 months.

So, if you are planning to outsource your content, blogging is a better choice.

This is because hiring people to write articles for your costs way less than hiring videographers.

7. Do you have any experience to manage a website

Though keyword research and SEO are a crucial part of getting a higher ranking on Google, there are other technical kinds of stuff that you will need to know.

If you already have experience creating a blog from scratch, you can quickly create another one in no time.

If this is your first time, then you will need to dedicate time to learn about WordPress.

If you don’t want to learn the technical stuff to build a blog, you might find it easier to add your content on medium or youtube.

8. Which one you enjoy the most

If you are a good writer, then it’s obvious you should choose to start your blog. If you are good at creating videos, youtube is the way to go.

However, you should give both a try and see which platform is more fun for you.

It’s vital to choose a platform that you enjoy as you will have to create content for a very long time. Trust me on that.

9. How you will update your old content

One of the reasons I like blogging more is the flexibility I have to update my old content.

Whenever I have to add new information to old content, I just have to go to a blog post and update it.

There will always be a situation where you will need to edit your old content. Maybe you will add a new affiliate link, or you will add more content.

But with videos, it is nearly impossible to update the information. This is one significant drawback of creating videos.

Final thoughts: Blogging Vs. Youtube – Which one is better for you?

Based on what I have discussed above, you can now decide which one is better for you.

I really cannot advise you which one will be better as it’s a personal choice.

The best way to find out is by trying to do both and see which one you like.

If you can start both, that will be great as you will have more traffic, and both platforms will be valuable to leverage your brand.

However, if you want to start a blog, I have a super-easy guide to help you with your blogging journey.
