We are in 2022 and if you still think that Facebook and Twitter are the best social media platform, think again.
Back in 2014, Facebook’s organic reach was really impressive. Small businesses were able to make a living from organic reach only. Those were some good times.
But that has changed now.
If you have a Facebook page, you already know that you will have to pay to reach your audience.
So, what’s the solution?
Pinterest, my friend.
During the past few years, Pinterest has seen a significant increase in its audience.
Right now, Pinterest has around 460 million active users.

As you can see there has been a significant increase in Pinterest users.
So why do so many business owners use Pinterest now?
The truth is:
A single pin can bring traffic to your blog for 6-12 months. This is something that no other social media platform can offer.
Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are platforms that can bring traffic to your content for at least a few days. Then everything disappears in the news feed.
That’s why it’s about time to make Pinterest your go-to social media platform for your marketing efforts.
How to use Pinterest for marketing
Before you start adding pins and hope that your Pinterest will start to send tons of traffic to your blog, there are a few things that you should do.
First, having a strong foundation is what will set you apart from the rest.
Next, you need to stay active on the Platform. It’s not that you add a few pins and Pinterest will shower you with blog traffic.
Therefore, it’s quite obvious that you will need to add pins CONSTANTLY to your Pinterest account. Once you reach the tipping point, you will see a huge increase in your blog traffic.
This is when you know Pinterest understands your account well and now views your account as an authority in your niche.
That being said, the very first step is to:
1.Update and convert your account
Pinterest is not just a social media platform. It is a search engine. And like any search engine, the foundation is KEYWORD.
For instance, have a look at my profile.

What can you notice?
My profile name suggests that my account is about: Starting your own business and making money online.
The profile description gives more information such as smart ways to make money online, how to work from home, and build a successful business.
As you can see, both my profile name and description contain keywords.
I will show you how to find keywords related to your niche later.
For the time being, convert your account into a business account.
Having a business account will help you to:
- Use Rich Pins.
- Promote your pins
- Have access to Pinterest analytics( Which will help you to leverage your blog traffic)
All of the above are crucial for the growth of your profile. And if you have a website, you will need to claim your URL with Pinterest.
The whole process will take only a few minutes.

2.Follow some relevant group boards
Many people claim that group boards are not effective. In the beginning, when I was reading about Pinterest marketing, I concluded that group boards are not effective.
This is what most people told me.
So, I believed them.
Huge mistake.
Group boards are very effective.
Have a look at my top-performing boards.

One thing I have learned well: What works for other people doesn’t mean will work for me. I have to try it to get an answer.
That being said, if you are searching for group boards, Pingroupie is the best option.
Just head over to Pingroupie, and type your niche keyword.
In the “Enter a niche or keyword” tab, enter your main keyword. For instance, if your niche is about food, you will enter the keyword “Food”.

Now, select these options:
- Request to join button
- Updated
- Ascending
You will get a list of all the active group boards that are related to the food niche.
Press on the boards and you will get a pop-up that will tell you to visit the board on Pinterest.

Press on “Visit this board on Pinterest” where you will be able to join the group board.

It was really easy, isn’t it?
All you have to do is to repeat this process so that you can join at least 10 group boards.
Note: Usually it will take some time to get accepted on a group board. I have waited 1-5 days to get accepted on some group boards.
3.Create a few boards
Having a variety of boards with different keywords is really crucial. This will ensure that you have maximum reach on Pinterest.
For instance, if your niche is DIY, you can have a few boards like:
- DIY gifts
- DIY Christmas gifts
- DIY for stay at home moms
- DIY crafts
- DIY gifts for friends
Now how can you fill these boards with keywords?
It’s really simple.
Head over to your Pinterest account and enter any keyword. Let’s say you have a board named “DIY Christmas gifts”.
If you enter this keyword, Pinterest will give you another set of keywords that are related to “DIY Christmas gifts”.

Now based on these findings your board description can be:
“Learn how you can make DIY Christmas gifts for your boyfriend. Cheap and easy DIY gifts for your kids. Best board where you can find Small DIY Christmas gift ideas”.
As you can see, I have included the keywords:
- DIY gift for your boyfriend
- Cheap DIY gifts for your kids
- Easy DIY gifts for your kids
- Small DIY Christmas gifts
And it doesn’t even look like keyword stuffing.
Once you have created all your boards, you will need to create a brand board.
So what is a brand board?
It is a board where you have ONLY your pins. It is important to have at least 1 brand board.
The purpose of a brand board is to put all your BEST pins in it. Whenever someone is visiting your board, they will have access to your best content.

4.Increase your followers
Though it is not essential to have a lot of followers to be able to generate a lot of traffic from Pinterest, having more followers means that your content will be seen by more people.
This can increase your chance of generating more traffic and you will get more engagements.
The thing is. The more engagement your pins are getting, the more Pinterest will show it on search results for at least a few days.
In short, aim to reach at least 1,000 followers.
So how can you do that?
Well, the most effective way is to find profiles similar to your niche and to start to follow their followers.
Given that these people are interested in your niche, the chance of them following you back is higher.
After you have followed them, you can send a message and ask them to follow you back.
For example: Hello. Hope you are fine. This is Girish from ViableBlog. I just added you to my network and followed you. Requesting you to follow back and connect further. Thank you.
5.Apply for rich pins
Rich pins are special pins that include extra information on the pin itself.
There are 6 kinds of Rich pins:
- Product pins
- Recipe pins
- Movie pins
- Article pins
- Place pins
- App pins
You will need to use article-rich pins because it is optimized for your blog posts. When the Rich pin is set up, Pinterest will be able to pull dates from your website via Open Graph and Schema.org formats for marking up.
Learn how you can enable Rich pins for your account.
Now that your account is set up, you will need to create pins.
6.Create pins that can go viral
As I have said before, Pinterest works like a search engine. The only difference between Google and Pinterest is that on Google people will find your blog posts, whereas on Pinterest they will find your Pins.
Since Pinterest is a visual platform, you should put more emphasis on the types of pictures you are using.
How can you make a viral pin?
Well, a viral pin must have these characteristics:
- The size of the pin. Vertical pins with an optimum size of 735 x 1,200 pixels perform best on Pinterest. But it’s better to try different sizes to know what works best for you. For example, you can try pins with these ratios: (2:3), (1:2), and (9:16).
- A good description. Your pins should contain a good description of your content. People should know what type of content they will get when they click on your pins. They should also contain at least 1 keyword so that it can be found on Pinterest search.
- Fonts that are easy to read. You will notice that fonts that are easy to read usually end up in the top search results. People want simple things. You don’t want to use fonts that will put any kind of extra pressure on your readers.
- Use simple images. Pins with a lot of space tend to perform better. So avoid adding too many pictures or elements on your pins.
- Use only a few hashtags. Based on my experience, adding 2-3 hashtags to your pins is enough.
Now, one thing is really important. You must post between 5-30 pins per day to get maximum traffic.
Now, you must be wondering how you can create so many pins.
Well, don’t worry. It’s really easy.
You can use Canva to create your pins. The awesome thing about Canva is that once you have created a template, you will just need to change the words and pictures.
Confused?
Here is a screenshot of my pin templates.

As you can see, whenever I have to create a new pin, I just need to change the wording, colors, and pictures.
With the ready-made templates, I can easily create a pin in under 1 min.
Pretty cool, Isn’t it?

7.Pin a lot
It’s a numbers game.
The more pins you have, the more traffic you will get. Actually, if you add 20-30 pins per day, you will see a significant increase in your traffic.
If you have a new Pinterest account, add 5 pins per day for the first 2 weeks.
Then increase it by 5 every week till you are posting at least 30 pins per day.
Now, there are two ways to do it. You can either add your pins manually or you can use Tailwind.
If you choose to add your pins manually, then you can read my manual pinning strategy here.
If you don’t have enough time, then your only choice is to use Tailwind.
Tailwind is the official Pinterest Scheduler.
It means that you just have to add all your pins, and tailwind will post it based on the optimum time for YOUR profile.
The great thing about Tailwind is that it analyzes the performance of your pins and will suggest optimal times to pin.

Tailwind suggests that these are the optimum times when my audience is active on Pinterest.
I cannot possibly add pins manually. This is where Tailwind helps me.
Now you must be wondering that I add only 2-7 pins daily.
Of course not. These are the pins that are scheduled on Tailwind.
I do add some pins manually every day.
What I have noticed is that using Tailwind together with manual pinning is more effective.
Here is how you can use Tailwind to schedule your posts in just 10 minutes.
You don’t need to provide any personal or credit card information. You just have to sync your Pinterest account and you are good to go.
So why not try it and see how it works for you.

8.Find your top performing boards and pins
After 2 weeks, head over to your Pinterest analytics to track the performance of your boards and pins.
You will need to know which boards and pins are performing well.
Once you get that information, create similar pins and add them to your top-performing boards.
This will allow you to get a boost in traffic.
When analyzing your pins, pay attention to the following:
- Colors and design of the pin
- Text overlay content
- Photos and graphics used
- Call to action used
Creating the same type of pins with slight variations in colors and fonts. You can also change the pictures. You don’t need to create everything from scratch.
Pro tip: Even if you change the font for 1 word, it will count as a new pin. This is important as now Pinterest favors fresh pins. All you have to do is just change your pin description.
Final thoughts: How to use Pinterest for marketing
Pinterest is an awesome platform. If you do everything I have told you, you will see an increase in your blog’s traffic.
So how powerful is Pinterest actually?
Some bloggers are earning $10,000-$15,000 per month with Pinterest ONLY.
This is the real power of the platform. It can help you generate a full-time income. At least it’s faster than Google.
The trick about blogging is: Focus on Pinterest first, then on SEO.
